Evaluation of Desperate Dependency (EDD)
We have included Psalm 119 here as a personal evaluation tool to assist you in determining your status as an individual who is desperately dependent on God. This exercise is not designed to create a monument to your success or failure as a Christian. Rather allow it to serve as a compass that establishes a “true north” so that you may align your path to arrive at the ultimate destination of Christlikeness. The author of this Psalm testifies to the paths he has taken along his course of relating to God. Therefore this instrument may also offer guidance for your direction as you attempt to follow the way to godliness.
In Galatians 5:22-23 God assures us, “The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” if we “follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives” (Gal. 5:25 NLT). This fruit completes His portrait in our lives so the watching world can see a glimpse of Christ. In our desire for independence, we attempt to counterfeit God’s fruit with our own design.
The Fruit Chart identifies the nine fruits of the Spirit, evidences of each fruit, the counterfeits that are employed to produce our own fruit, and the culminations of our feeble attempts. If you notice the disastrous results of the culminations, follow the chart to expose the counterfeits and then employ the action verses to follow the Spirit’s leading and evidence the fruit of His Spirit.
When we live independently from God we search for a substitute as our validating source. Without a desperate dependency on Him we establish a counterfeit connection with people, positions, and possessions in our pursuit for validation. We extract love from illicit relationships to prove that we are lovable, to establish our significance, and to enable us to feel secure. But in actuality we suffer loss because people, positions, and possessions are incapable of fulfilling us. Ultimately we are left unfulfilled, dissatisfied, and incomplete as the result of pursuing God substitutes. The delusional sense of satisfaction that stimulates and sedates eventually fades and we are left wanting more. In our vain attempts we explore other counterfeits that may promise temporary contentment but only provide mutually satisfying exploitation and manipulation to empower our identity.
Too often we are stuck in our anger and ruminate on the offenses until they fester in our souls. The Anger Tree follows a series of determinative questions to clarify how we should proceed in order to move from anger and bitterness.
You will notice that all branches on the Anger Tree culminate in forgiveness. But it is not necessarily an easy path. The process is described in chapters 8 and 9 of Desperate Dependency.
Bad Belief / Good God
By integrating our bad beliefs and the names of our good God, we can recognize that God is fully capable of addressing each of our bad beliefs through His unfathomable character. We need to connect to Him in the ways He has revealed Himself through His names so His truth can combat our bad beliefs. Every bad belief is a distortion of God’s nature and intended by Satan to build a wall between God and us. But when we can identify our bad beliefs and appropriate the Spirit of our good God, the strongholds of Satan will be broken.
