Expectations: Be Like Christ

Empower One Another

“My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.” (Gal. 2:20 NLT)

[This continuing series of Marriages that Minister is currently exploring expectations within marriage.]

Throughout Scripture we find directions as to how Spirit-led followers should interact with one another. The multiplicity of “one another” passages teaches us how to live as Christ lived. This continuing series elaborates on a wide range of One Anothers to guide conduct within marriage.

Don’t Lie to Each Other

Empowerment comes when we are consistently connected to truth.

Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds. (Col. 3:9 NLT)

Seeking to recreate truth is a subtle perversion working deceptively to overthrow Christ’s authority. Therefore, do not make a choice to create a false image of reality while attempting an avoidance of accountability to God’s light.

Confess to One Another

When we confess to one another, we agree with God concerning His judgments. We readily acknowledge before Him and to all others that He is right and I am wrong; He is holy and I am sinful; He is truth and I am a liar. Confession is the total acceptance of God’s perspective and seeks to come into congruence with God’s will as it specifically applies to me. When we confess our sins to one another, it is not merely to have a heavy burden relieved from our hearts, but that our spouse may join with us at the throne of grace to receive His mercy, forgiveness, and healing thereby resulting in praise and glory to God.

Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. (James 5:16 NASB)

Bear One Another’s Burdens

The results of carrying sinful weights are relieved through confession to Christ. Bearing one another’s burdens happens when we willingly assist our mate in their process of persevering under the strain of immaturity or when the demands of life exceed their strength.

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. (Gal. 6:2 NIV)
