Lay Counselor Training
Lay Counselor Training is a ministry of Desperately Dependent Community. This training focuses on developing leaders who have
- a Christ-centered perspective of life’s problems,
- a Christ-centered understanding of the solution to life’s problems, and
- a Christ-centered discernment of applying Biblical truth to becoming complete in Christ.
The goal of Lay Counselor Training is to build ministry competence that leads others in finding Christ relevant to life’s struggles while becoming desperately dependent on Jesus personally.
The DDCommunity Lay Counselor Training offers Christ-centered solutions to the human condition. Our counseling process is founded upon the belief that Jesus Christ is the center of wellness, that the Bible is our authority for practice, and that psychology is defined as the applied aspect of theology. The training consistently asserts that people may only achieve wellness as they become mature in Jesus Christ. We do not profess or adhere to any secular perspective, nor do we seek to advise anyone in the ways of these secular practices.
Supporting Your Church
DDC will strive to work with church leaders to create a functional structure supportive of the Lay Counseling process. DDC leadership considers the Lay Counselor Training to be a partnership with the church where the participant will be functioning as a Lay Counselor Leader; and therefore, we may consult with the church leadership during the training process.
Desperately Dependent Community expects that the partnering church will seek legal counsel to address concerns regarding Lay Counseling within the church. DDC does not proffer any credential to act as legal counsel in any manner concerning the liability of a Lay Counseling ministry. We also anticipate that each Lay Counseling participant will be appointed by a church and appropriately added to the church’s liability policy.
Why Train Others?
DDCommunity’s Lay Counselor Training has been inspired by Paul’s letter to Timothy:
“You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:1-2 NASB).
Promoting Spiritual Maturity
DDCommunity’s Lay Counselor Training does not hold any secular accreditation but exists solely for the promotion of spiritual maturity within the body of Christ. Those holding the designation of Lay Counselor Leader are not presenting themselves to be any form of a counselor qualified to function outside the spiritual realm.
It’s a Process
DDCommunity’s Lay Counselor Training is a 2-year process comprising 6 semesters. The training times occur every 4 weeks on a Saturday from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, and include discussions, role plays, and supervision with an expectation that homework will be completed before each session. Session dates may be found on the DDC Calendar.
